A three-tier approach to CBD regulation being advanced by the European Industrial Hemp Association (EIHA) will be reviewed during “The Future of Medical Hemp” micro-summit Aug. 23-24, 2019 at HempToday Center in Poland.
EIHA Managing Director Lorenza Romanese will update the gathering on the Association’s work in Brussels aimed at setting a fair and effective framework for CBD.
Host HempToday, EIHA and Czech hemp firm Hempoint are co-organizers of the summit, which will survey the current status and opportunities in the CBD sector and the many opportunities that exist in medical, food, food supplements and health & beauty products that incorporate CBD. The main sponsor for the event is leading European CBD brand CannabiGold, whose Sales Director, Jacek Kramarz is among the experts who also will address the Summit.
3-tier framework proposed
EIHA has proposed a three-tier regulatory framework for products containing CBD, noting the current tenuous patchwork of rules covering CBD and hemp extracts in the European Union put in peril the CBD food and food supplements markets.
Under EIHA recommendations:
- At high doses, CBD-laced products should be considered as medicinal and should be regulated as such.
- At medium doses, CBD products should be regarded as an over-the-counter product or a food supplement, similar to rules governing substances such as valerian, glucosamine, chondroitin (sulfate), Ginkgo Biloba, some vitamins and iron products.
- Low CBD concentrations and doses should be allowed in food products without any restrictions.
Update on Novel Foods
Romanese will include an update on EIHA’s work in Brussels aimed at defining hemp extracts — most importantly CBD — as legacy foods in Europe, and therefore exempt from costly compliance rules under Novel Foods Catalogue guidelines.
A veteran policy advisor and communication manager at the European level, Romanese has led EIHA’s efforts in Brussels since February 2019. She has worked with a number MEPs to propose hemp reforms to the Common Agriculture Policy in the European Union.
