Industrial hemp production in Illinois dipped slightly last year, when 2,392 acres were planted, compared to 2,800 acres in 2019. The Illinois Department of Agriculture (IDOA) said 87% of the hemp planted in 2020 was harvested. Yields brought roughly 1.3 million lbs. of hemp flower, 48,000 lbs. of hemp fiber, and 39,000 lbs. of seed, IDOA reported. Last year was the second year of legalized hemp production in Illinois. IDOA said the coronavirus pandemic and some problems with processing hampered the industry in 2020. IDOA is now accepting applications for the 2021 hemp growing season.
