Consumer goods giant Colgate-Palmolive said it has patented an antiperspirant formula containing CBD that could also lead to the compound’s application in other personal care products for the skin and hair, including hand soaps, body washes, shampoo & conditioners, and cosmetics.

The company said it developed the antiperspirant, available in roll-on, stick, gel and aerosol forms, in response to a growing need for products that do not cause skin irritation and due to surging interest in CBD.

Reducing irritation

Incorporating CBD into its antiperspirant composition resulted in “a surprising reduction of the irritation and inflammation” caused by some active ingredients in conventional formulas such as aluminum and zirconium salts, which can cause skin irritation. And in vitro testing has shown compositions containing CBD provide anti-irritation benefits not only at the gene level but also at protein level, Colgate-Palmolive said.

When combined with metal-containing antiperspirant ingredients, present in amounts up to 40% of the final formula, CBD or other cannabinoids could be integrated at levels of 0.001 and 5.0 wt. % in oil form, according to the company.

Noting in its patent filing that 50% of the world population is considered to have sensitive skin, Colgate-Palmolive wrote, “It is therefore desirable to develop and formulate efficacious anti-irritant ingredients into personal care products to mitigate potential irritant-induced redness, tingling, itching, or burning of the skin to a tolerable level for improved consumer compliance.”

Other cannabinoids’ potential

While CBD is highlighted in the patent filing, Colgate-Palmolive said other cannabinoids, including cannabichromene (CBC), cannabigerol (CBG) and cannabicitran (CBT) could also be used in such consumer products.

Colgate-Palmolive also has patents for oral care formulas that include CBD which the company says offer improved antibacterial efficacy in addition to anti-inflammatory benefits.

The company early last year acquired New Jersey-based Hello Products, a maker of toothpastes, mouthwashes and lip balms that contain CBD in broad-spectrum hemp oil and hemp extract.
