An American coffin maker has had its newly developed hemp-composite casket approved by the Green Burial Council, a trade group that evaluates practices and materials used by the funeral and burial industries.
The Wooden Casket, LLC, Tompkinsville, Kentucky, added the casket, made of HempWood from Kentucky-based Fibonacci LLC, to its line of eco-friendly wooden coffins.
HempWood is also being used in cabinets, flooring, picture frames and other common objects that are usually made from wood. Made by compressing hemp stalks and a soy-based binder, the material has 20% greater density than wood.
