While more hemp licenses were issued in Ireland this year, rising to 94 from 74 in 2019, hemp fields planted fell to around 362 hectares in 2020, down from 547 hectares the previous year. That’s according to figures from the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA), which noted a high rate of turnover as 60 permits issued were to those who did not farm hemp last year. The other 34 were renewals. HPRA said license applications indicated the crops are for end products in food, animal bedding, fiber-based goods, hemp oil and cosmetics; and for research and analysis.
