A Latvian woman who had her hemp plants seized has been awarded a €1,500 judgment by an Administrative Court. Police took all 363 of pensioner Dzidra Bruzgule’s hemp plants in an August 2018 raid at her home in Viļāni parish, later filing criminal charges. The charges were dismissed after the plants tested negative for any psychoactive substances. Police apologized, but Bruzgule demanded compensation of €3,000 for the stress and health problems caused by the raid. The court recently ruled in her favor, but cut the financial reward in half. Hemp is widely grown in Latvia, and has been used for centuries in butters and oils, in baked goods and fermented drinks.
