By the 1930s, the struggling cotton and timber industries saw hemp as a threat to their interests, and the unscrupulous newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst, who had lots of his money tied up in the timber industry, mounted a campaign to demonize marijuana and other cannabis plants, including hemp.
